Klein was in New York for an exhibition of his work at the gallery of Leo Castelli, the influential art dealer. Known for championing the cause of avant-garde contemporary art, Castelli played a central part in the careers of Robert Rauschenberg, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. But his magic dust failed to settle on Yves Klein, and not a single painting in the show was sold. To be fair, it was a tough sell.
